How do I transfer information from an old phone to a new phone?

We know that one of the most important things when getting a new phone is making sure all the data from your old phone gets transferred over to your new phone. To make this process easier, we have provided steps for the most common ways to get your information transferred from one phone to another.

Android to Android

Below are steps for transferring data from one Android phone to another Android phone. You will first need to backup your old Android phone and then restore your new Android phone from the backup.

Also, there are other ways to transfer data from Android to Android, but we provide steps for transferring data using the Settings of your phone and Google. Please note that not all Android phones have settings in the same place or with the same names.

To Backup Your Android Phone:

  • Make sure both phones are charged and are connected to Wi-Fi
  • On the old phone, go to Settings and sign into your Google Account if you are not already logged in
    • If you do not have a Google Account, create a Google Account
  • In Settings, tap Accounts & sync, turn on Auto-sync data if it is off
  • Go back to Settings
  • Tap Backup and reset
  • Ensure Backup my data is on. This confirms that your application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and various phone settings are sent to Google servers and are ready when you restore to a new phone
  • For Backup account, add a backup account if it is not already added
  • Be sure that Automatic restore is also turned on

To Backup Photos and Videos:

Photos and videos taken from your phone go in your Camera Folder and automatically get backed up safely to Google Photos, but you will still want to make sure that Google Photos is backing up those photos and videos to your Google Account. Below are steps to backup photos and videos in Google Photos.

  • Open Google Photos
  • Tap the Menu icon in the top left corner
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Back up & sync
  • Make sure Back up & sync is turned on here, that there is a Backup Account added, and choose if you would like to Back up device folders

To Restore or Set Up Your New Android Phone:

  • On the Welcome screen, select the language and tap Let’s Go
  • Tap Copy your data for the restore option
  • Connect to Wi-Fi to continue
  • On the Bring your data from… screen, tap A backup from the cloud
  • Sign into your Google Account and agree to the terms
  • A list of backup options will appear, select the most relevant backup to restore the data
  • Tap Restore to get all the data and settings from your previous phone restored
  • Tap Apps to choose which apps to install on your new phone
  • Once the initial setup is completed, apps and settings will be restored in the background
  • Next, your photos will need to be restored from Google Photos
  • Open Google Photos and sign into your Google Account
  • On the Photos tab, you will see your backed up photos and videos. You will also be able to see if it’s still waiting to back up all the photos and videos

Android to iPhone

Below are steps for transferring content from an Android phone to an iPhone. Before transferring data from your Android phone to an iPhone, be sure that all other iOS devices, such as an iPad, are turned off. Doing so helps to eliminate issues that may occur while the two phones are trying to transfer and receive data. Please note that free apps you had on your Android phone will be automatically added if they are available for iPhone and paid apps will be added your wish list.

  • Make sure your Android and iPhone are connected to Wi-Fi
  • On your Android phone, download and open the Move to iOS App
  • On your new iPhone, go through the first steps of the setup until you reach the Apps & Data screen
  • Tap Move Data from Android > Continue
  • You will receive a code on your iPhone
  • Enter that same code into your Android phone in the Move to iOS App
  • Choose the data you want to transfer > Next
  • Depending on how much media you have, this process may take awhile
  • When the transfer is complete on your iPhone, tap Continue Setting Up iPhone
  • You will create a new Apple ID or enter an existing one
  • Proceed with the rest of your iPhone set up

If you would like to just transfer your photos, make sure photos are backed up to Google Photos on your Android. Then download Google Photos on your iPhone. The photos can then be easily uploaded to your iPhone.

  • When asked, enter your old iPhone’s passcode on the new one
